How it works
To determine how to deliver a piece of mail, the first step in the process is for the sending mail server to look up what's called an MX record. This record ultimately points to the IP address of a server where mail should be sent to. MX records are however unique from other DNS records (such as A records or CNAMES) in that they also contain a priority. The priority becomes important when there is a desire to have multiple mail-servers to deliver to, such as the case with our sMX plugin.
Based on their relative priority values, the sending mail-server will determine which server to send to first. If, for instance, server A has a priority of 0 and server B has a priority of 10, then server A will be delivered to first. Now, the magic happens where server A is down, the sending mail server will be able to detect this fact and will send mail to server B instead. Server B in our case would be the server with the sMX plugin installed. It is important to note that without a secondary MX record (and therefore a backup mail server), mail will be bounced back to the sender in the event of server A going off-line!
The sMX server will accept and hold the mail until it determines that server A is back online, at which point it will deliver any mail it received during the outage to server A.

Here are a few screen shots of our SMX plugin installed on a DNS-ONLY install of cPanel. As you can see the plugin is very simple to use!
